The Orthopaedic Leg Trolley is the newest daily living aid to be added to our hire fleet. Sometimes known as a leg scooter or knee trolley the walking aid is specifically designed to assist rehabilitation of lower leg injuries. This equipment in many instances replaces the requirement for crutches and wheelchairs in the house, and aids independent mobility, leaving hands and arms free. The Orthopaedic Leg Trolley is often hired for use in the home while hiring the Elevated Leg Rest Wheelchair or Knee Scooter provides greater freedom when outside.
The leg trolley supports the user through a padded knee cradle, and allows the user to glide on their injured leg, striding as per usual. The Knee Trolley is steered using pressure through the knee, and this can be assisted using the hand support on the front of the trolley. Initially we suggest using the handle for steering, but quickly users will develop the simple skill of steering through pressure from the knee. In time users will be able to glide for 2 or 3 meters per stride. This allows faster more efficient movement over greater distances, and exercises the upper part of the leg, helping faster rehabilitation.
The Orthopaedic Leg Trolley is designed to fit all users. It has a maximum user weight of 180kg, even though the product only weighs 6kg itself. The height of the knee cradle can be adjusted in seconds, and with adjustment holes every 15mm, it can be made to fit all leg lengths. On the knee cradle itself, the knee is cushioned by 5 individual foam pieces of different consistencies. These move independently, and allow the injured leg to be supported comfortably, and in the best way to rehabilitate from the injury.
Hiring the leg scooter has been found to be particularly useful when helping those with the following injuries:
- Ruptured Achilles Tendon
- Broken foot or ankle
- Sprained ankle or ligament damage
- Diabetic Ulcer
- Fractured Heel
Please note that as weight is put on the shin and knee, it is not suitable for those with injuries to those areas of the leg.
It should be noted that the Orthopaedic Leg Trolley was developed and made by structural steel engineering firm Reid Steel over 20 years ago when their MD suffered a foot injury. The first one was originally made for his use only, but interest from members of the public and medical professionals encouraged them to put it into production. As a product made by a structural steel firm, rather than a dedicated mobility company, it is not the most aesthetically pleasing piece of equipment available, and does tend to accumulate cosmetic markings on the bodywork, particularly the lower frame. While this does not in any way affect the safety or operation of the Leg Trolley, and all of them are fully cleaned and serviced in between hires, it does lend them a somewhat "industrial" look.
