Sunrise Medical Quickie Salsa R2 Powerchair
- Great outdoor performance
- Large range of seating options
- More affordable than Salsa M
The Sunrise Medical Quickie Salsa R2 is from the same family of indoor/outdoor powerchairs as the popular Salsa M2. While many of its features and options remain the same, the key difference is that the Salsa R2 comes with rear-wheel rather than mid-wheel drive. This means the Salsa remains available to those that prefer rear-wheel drive, as well as making it slightly more affordable; however, the Salsa R2 is less manoeuvrable indoors than the mid-wheel drive variant.
The Salsa R2 offers extremely good outdoor performance, and it has independent drive wheel suspension to ensure a smooth ride over uneven terrain. The Salsa R2 has an extremely long range of up to 18 miles, meaning that it should never be without power, even when tackling rough terrain, and it is available with a top speed of 6 mph.
While just as usable indoors, the Salsa R2's rear-wheel drive does mean that it is less manoeuvrable than the mid-wheel drive variant. However, the narrow width of the wheelchair does allow it to fit easily through doors and confined spaces.
The Quickie Salsa R2 is suitable to a wide-range of wheelchair users, with a weight capacity of 22 stone (140kg), and the seat width and depth can be adjusted from 16” – 20”. As well as other adjustments, including the backrest height and seat angle, it allows the wheelchair to be set up precisely for the user, giving them the comfort and support that they need in a way that less-configurable powerchairs cannot rival.
For those with more specialist needs, a vast range of seating options are available with the Salsa, including JAY comfort cushioning, backrests, headrests, legrests and lateral supports. Additionally, various powered postural additions can be fitted to the Salsa, including powered lift, powered tilt, powered recline and powered elevating leg rests.
The Salsa R2 is also fully crash tested making it safe to transport, and comes with six tie-down points, allowing it to be used for occupied transport in a suitably adapted vehicle.
Overall, the Salsa R2 is a high performing adult powerchair that has a large range of seating options. It is ideal for those that want an advanced wheelchair to use both indoors and out, and who don't need to negotiate tight spaces when inside. It offers an affordable alternative to the Quickie Puma 40 and Invacare's Kite, which are higher-end rear-wheel drive powerchairs, and sits roughly equivalent to Invacare's popular Bora.
