Best Lightweight Mobility Scooters for the Elderly

A lightweight mobility scooter can make your travels easier, whether you are visiting family, shopping or going on a holiday. As it is easier to lift, fold and dismantle, it is a pragmatic choice for older people who regularly travel by car. The right scooter should easily integrate into your lifestyle and support your comfort and independence.

However, choosing the lightest mobility scooter isn't necessarily the best choice for everyone. It is also important to consider comfort, range, stability and its turning circle.

In this guide, we look at some of the best lightweight mobility scooters for elderly people and the different lifestyles they suit.

What should you look for in a lightweight mobility scooter?

Consider how you intend to transport it, where you intend to travel and what type of features you need from a scooter. We go over some factors to consider choosing the right scooter.

1. Do you need a folding or dismantling scooter?

Folding scooters can be convenient and are the most intuitive to store because they do not need to be taken apart. However, choosing a folding scooter would mean you will have to lift the entire scooter. The total weight of folding scooters tends to be lighter than dismantling scooters and can weigh below 20 kg. Before you purchase, we would recommend lifting your scooter of choice to determine if you are comfortable with its folded size and transport weight.

Dismantling models can be taken apart into lighter and smaller individual components. Although their total weight may be higher, the heaviest individual component can be significantly lighter than lifting an entire folding scooter. Additionally, having a heavier total weight would give you more stability over uneven pavements. While our assessors would demonstrate how to assemble and disassemble your scooter, you might prefer the convenience of a folding scooter.

2. What is the maximum weight you want to carry?

The scooter's weight is particularly important if you or a family member will regularly lift the scooter into a car. Alternatively, you could potentially purchase a scooter ramp or a hoist if you want to avoid lifting a scooter.

If you are evaluating between a dismantling and a folding scooter, it can be helpful to compare your experience between the different scooters. By testing in person, you can determine if you prefer carrying several lighter, smaller components or one heavier component.

When comparing lightweight scooters, it can be useful to avoid asking "How much does the scooter weigh?" instead, ask "What is the heaviest part I actually have to lift, and do I mind the dismantling process?".

3. How long will you need to travel?

The range in a scooter informs you how long it can drive before running out of battery. As different mobility scooters will vary in range, you will need to consider how far you typically travel between charges.

4. How much is comfort a priority?

You might find scooters are not all equally comfortable. Suspension, seat size and armrests can make a noticeable difference, especially when you've been out for hours. Determine if you need features like an adjustable tiller to position your arms optimally, or full suspension to absorb bumps over uneven ground.

5. What is the maximum user weight you need?

Scooters vary in the weight they can withstand depending on its material and frame structure. Always ensure your scooter of choice can support your weight. This allows your scooter to run safely and efficiently for longer.

6. Can your scooter fit into your car boot?

If you intent to travel with your scooter in your car boot, you will need to check the scooter's folded or dismantled dimensions against your vehicle. During an assessment with a Wheelfreedom assessor, you can test out different scooters in your car to see which fits.

7. Will you travel abroad with the scooter?

If you intend to fly with your scooter, check its battery size and your airline regulations before travelling. Some mobility scooters including the eFOLDi Lite, TGA WHILL R and Monarch Mobility Genie Ultralight, can be taken on the plane.
