Cost of mobility scooters

The cost of scooters is mainly affected by their size, manufacturer, specifications and features. Smaller scooters can be more affordable compared to larger road scooters. If you require support with funding your scooter, please contact us on 0800 025 8005 or enquiries@wheelfreedom.com for access to our full list of charities that may help fund your mobility equipment.

If you are not eligible for any government or charity grants, you can alternatively purchase from our range of approved used mobility scooters or hire for a short term.

Mobility Scooter Aftercare and Servicing

After a purchase, we provide a comprehensive aftercare service including:

Specialist delivery and set up for all scooters available: We believe every mobility scooter should be delivered by a trained product specialist who can set it up for you, make any necessary adjustments, and provide guidance on how to use it. Our expert team will also assess your environment to ensure your scooter is the perfect fit for your needs.

Our engineers: Our team of industry-trained engineers carry out all our repairs, servicing and maintenance, either at your address or our fully-equipped Chessington service centre. We don't believe in passing after-sales care onto a third party. Our technicians will collect your scooter directly from your home, removing the need to deal with a third-party courier or send it back yourself. With service coverage across London and the South East, we can respond quickly if an issue arises.

Complimentary loan scooters: Your independence is always a priority; we provide a complimentary loan scooter with every hire or purchase, allowing you to stay mobile without any additional cost while your scooter is in for repair.

Insurance included for all hires and Motability: When you hire from us, whether on a long or short-term basis, or through Motability, insurance is included as part of your hire without additional cost. All our mobility scooters come with at least a one-year warranty. Invacare and TGA scooters come with either a two or three-year warranty, and Motion Healthcare products have an industry-leading warranty of 5 years.

We are appointed representatives for Fish Insurance and can talk you through their range of Insurance, Breakdown Coverage and Extended Warranty services. If you are hiring from us or leasing a scooter through the Motability scheme, it will be fully insured with breakdown cover included.

Award-winning service: At Wheelfreedom, we received the Motability Scheme Dealer Award in 2022. Our team is dedicated to delivering a high customer service standard and scored an average rating of 9.7/10, making us the top-rated Motability dealers for Scooters.

Choosing the Right Mobility Scooter

Finding the best mobility scooter for your needs depends on a few key factors—how you plan to use it, where you’ll store it, and the level of comfort and support you require. Whether you’re looking for a portable solution or a robust road scooter, we’ll guide you to a model that fits both your lifestyle and environment.

There are a few key factors to consider when making your choice:

1) Storage and Space Requirements

When choosing a scooter, it is important to consider where it will be stored. Mobility scooters are best stored indoors as they will be sheltered from the elements, and it helps preserve battery life. Larger mobility scooters take up more space and are best stored indoors to keep them protected and maintain battery life. If space is limited, a compact boot scooter may be a better fit. Some models allow you to remove the battery for indoor charging, so the scooter can stay in a garage or vehicle.

2) Different usages for your scooter

The best mobility scooter for you is dependent on how and where you intend to use it. Each model is engineered to meet different requirements, ranging from portability to extended outdoor journeys.

  • Boot scooters are lightweight, compact, and easy to transport, making them ideal for short trips, shopping centres, and smooth pavements. Their portability makes them a great choice for occasional use and travel.

  • Pavement scooters (Class 2) offer better stability and range for the outdoors. Although they are not suitable for road use, travel scooters are excellent for trips around urban areas as they can go up to 4 mph.

  • Road scooters (Class 3) are built for long journeys and uneven terrains. With speeds up to 8 mph, larger batteries and suspension, road scooters are excellent options for users who want to spend a full day outdoors in comfort.

3) Transporting your mobility scooter

If you plan to take your scooter in the car, boot scooters are usually the best option as they are lightweight and can be dismantled. Boot scooters are designed to be easily lifted and compactly stored in car boots.

Folding scooters are another good option designed for portability. While folding scooters cannot be dismantled, some users prefer scooters without the need for assembly and disassembly. If you have challenges with lifting a scooter into your car, you could also opt for a car hoist from our partner, Autochair.

Some pavement scooters can be taken apart for occasional travel, but larger road scooters usually require an adapted vehicle or a van with ramps. If you’re planning to use public transport, it’s recommended to check with your provider if they are able to accommodate the size of your scooter.

4) Finding the Right Fit and Comfort

Comfort is particularly important if you intend to use your scooter for long hours. Seat height, back support, legroom and suspension all contribute to a scooter that feels natural to use and easy to ride.

  • Larger scooters offer high-back seats with headrests and more legroom, which is great for taller users or longer trips.

  • Adjustable seats, armrests, and swivel functions can make transfers easier and help support good posture.

  • If you have arthritis or limited grip strength, ergonomic handlebars and delta tillers provide a flexible and comfortable control.

If you are not sure what will suit you best, we are happy to talk through the options and provide a test drive during an appointment.
